Q: Anxiety Disorder?
My bestfriends boyfriend has an anxiety disorder, and they're always fighting because he wants to be in control, but he never makes sense and he's not very reasonable. What is it exactly? How does it make you act?

A: he sounds more like a dick than someone with anxiety disorder. i have an anxiety disorder and i was always very suspicious of people doing things for me (making food, things like that), even those i trusted (like my mom), i would have panic attacks for no reason, and certain triggers would cause me to have panic attacks as well. i was very afraid of speaking out because i was afraid of retaliation. i didn't trust myself to do a lot of things because i was afraid of having a panic attack and messing up or getting killed from it (driving for example, i never would have drove). i'm sure some people act very differently from me, but i'm sorry, he just sounds like an asshole.

Q: What is the best mediation for generalized anxiety disorder?
I have been taking zoloft and klonopin for anxiety for a while and I think it is no longer helping enough. I am thinking of switching to a different ssri and ativan (instead of klonopin). Any suggestions on what the best med is for generalized anxiety disorder. Thanks!

A: Try smoking pot. MUCH less dangerous than the drugs you are taking now.

Q: What is the difference between having anxiety, and having generalized anxiety disorder?
What is the difference between having anxiety, and having generalized anxiety disorder?

A: Everone has anxiety at on time or another. It crosses over to clinical GAD if you have anxiety for a long time and it inteferes with your daily life.

Q: Can having anxiety disorder and bipolar cause irregular periods?
I have anxiety disorder and bipolar. I know there is some link between stress and irregulars periods but the drs won't admit this. I am not sure why. It seems when I am having different phases my periods are different. When I am manic my periods are light; when I am depressed they are heavy. Is it my period causing this change of moods or is it my moods causing the change in my flows?

A: Yep, does that to mine, too. My gyno told me it was probably that. Sometimes I even miss periods when I am really stressed. It is both your moods causing the change, and you period can cause you to be moody.

Q: How can you get over social anxiety disorder?
I've had social anxiety disorder for three years now and it gets worse everyday. I stopped going to school because the panic attacks and i couldan't handle being in large crowds. I've lost all my friends since i've got it, and i've become depressed because i'm so lonely.

A: First, get on some medication if you aren't already on some. Second, talk to a counselor/professional. Third, you need to make a conscious decision not to let your social anxiety disorder affect your life.

Q: How do you deal with social anxiety disorder?
I have social anxiety disorder; I was diagnosed about 3 years ago. I have tried medication and therapy, but I don't like how the medication makes me feel and I would like to find an alternative to therapy. How do you combat negative thoughts and face your fears in social situations? One negative thought in particular I am having difficulty with is the constant fear that my boyfriend is cheating on me. How do I get rid of this?

A: Its hard to overcome... what meds have you been on? I have General Anexiety Disorder and sometimes it controls my life. There are times when I can't even leave my bedroom. Sometimes I go hysterical at work (so embarressing) and other times I'm able to calm myself down, but it's hard. I take xanax daily... i used to be on a "maintenance" drug - but I didn;t like it, so now I'm going to counsuling ... It's not making a huge difference yet, but I am learning how to cope and what to do when I feel I'm about to have a panic attack... Sometimes just learning new ways to cope really help. Hang in there. Just remember some of the negative thoughts and fears you have are irrational. He loves you and would never cheat on you. Just the fear of it happening is scary - analyze the situation. . . (Trust is the most important part of a relationship, you know that so have a little trust & faith) Hang in there doll.

Q: What is the treatment for the general anxiety disorder type of dual diagnosis?
Nana, my former nanny, is suffering from general anxiety disorder. She worries about every little thing - dirty laundry, picnics, allowances, family gatherings... whatever. It's not bad to get worried sometimes but she's overdoing it. She worries too much. She always seems scared even if there's nothing to be scared about. She's also having problems with her health. She always feel dizzy and nauseous. Her head aches often and her heart always pound twice as fast. Please tell me the treatments for GAD. I really want to help Nana. I know it's hard to live a life filled with tension and worries.

A: The two main treatments for a general anxiety disorder are medication and psychotherapy. The type of medication used in treating GAD is an anti-depressant. As in name suggests, an anti-depressant fights depression. It tries to counter all negative thoughts like distress, agony and anxiety. One of the newer types of anti-depressant is the SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Even if it causes nausea and sexual dysfunction in some cases, SSRI is considered very helpful for it enhances the mood by manipulating neurotransmitters. Two types of helpful therapies are behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy. Behavioral therapy aims to lessen or to eliminate the behavior brought by the disorder. In your Nana's case, it's the anxiety. Through behavioral therapy, she'll be taught how to relax in times of worry-filled situations and how to breathe well to fight hyperventilation. Cognitive therapy, on the other hand, aims to discover the connection between your Nana's mental state and her anxiety. She'll be taught how to deal with unwanted thoughts full of anxiety to prevent GAD symptoms. It will help her fight the disorder.

Q: How to go about getting help for anxiety disorder?
I have medi-cal at no cost. And I NEED help with this social anxiety disorder ive looked up the symptoms online and it seems as if that is what i am suffering from. So my question is do I go to my regular doctor and he will send me to a psychiatrist? Im so lost, please help!

A: Go to your normal doctor, he/she will recomend someone to you. I have a pretty bad anxiety disorder and first i went to my doctor, got reassurance then i got counselling. And dont worry everything will be okay i promise. You just have to go deep and find the cause of things. I thought i was dying when i had a panic attack and it all got better.

Q: How can I test if I have generalized anxiety disorder?
I feel anxious all of the time and I have read about generalized anxiety disorder. Is there another way, besides therapy, that I can be daignosed?

A: Yes, I went to my family doctor, and described how I had been feeling he asked me several questions, checked my vitals and gave me a prescription for anti anxiety meds. Since then just knowing what's causing this has made me feel so much better, before I was always scared there was some horrible physical illness causing me to feel this way, now I know and feel much better. Please see your dr, you will be glad afterwards, good luck, you'll get thru this :-)

Q: What anxiety disorder has the longest lifetime prevalence?
Which of the following types of anxiety disorders has the highest lifetime prevalence rate? Is it: A) generalized anxiety disorder B) panic disorder C) phobias D) obsessive-compulsive disorder

A: i would say phobias because GAD, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive can sometimes come with Depression. unless you have reallllyyy bad phobias, i doubt your life expectency will lessen.

Q: How would you know if you had an anxiety disorder?
If you know something or another on this subject, these are my specific questions: Firstly, can you develop an anxiety disorder and then loose it or is it something your born with? Do people who take meds have an anxiety disorder? And how would you know if you had an anxiety disorder? All help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

A: You don't have to be born with an anxiety disorder. You can get anxious whenever. Also, sometimes you may not notice a struggle with anxiety until later in life. You don't just "loose" an anxiety disorder. It can be helped but it's never really lost. Certain things still may make a person anxious. Not everyone who take medications have an anxiety disorder. This DOES NOT mean that all people who take medications do not have an anxiety disorder. Anyone can. There are many different symptoms of anxiety; insomnia, repeated thoughts, fears of irrational things (ex: public restrooms, talking on the phone in public, etc.). The best way to find out is by going to a counselor or doctor.

Q: How can you tell if you have an anxiety disorder?
I think i have some sort of anxiety disorder or I'm depressed or something. I've researched a lot about it and I have almost all of the symptoms/signs of the anxiety, but I'm not sure. I'm scared to tell my parents about it, so there any way that i could get tested or something without my parents knowing?

A: Well, here's the thing about a psychiatric diagnosis- it's not always accurate and labels you for the rest of your life. The only way to know for sure is by speaking with a psychiatrist. There is no way to diagnose yourself based off an online website, as you nor the source are qualified for such judgment. Anxiety disorders are often linked to Depression, as they both surround a lack of Seratonin in the brain. Many people, especially adolescents believe they have a disorder when its simply strong emotion fueled by an unstable period of time. Medication isn't a panacea for emotional issue, it provides a stable environment in which you can cope and hopefully work through the cause. Basically, its a whole lot of work. If you believe you have some sort of chemical imbalance, then check it out. I recommend meeting with a therapist prior delving into psychiatry- as you will have a stable sounding board to work on the emotional aspect of coping with potential disorder.

Q: What is a good summer job for someone with an anxiety disorder?
Hi, I'm looking for my first summer job, but I suffer from a strong anxiety disorder which limits a lot of options. My psychaitrist said a job is good to give me a sense of responsibility and confidence, but I don't think I can handle the job. I would love to know if anyone who went through similar situations have any suggestions? Thank You

A: I can relate to your situation as a person with a disability. I was so nervous about my first job as a summer school tutor, but it turned out to be a great experience. You could contact your local center of independent living because they have tons of employment information and resources. If you like animals, you could try getting a job working in a dog kennel. Another idea would be to try working at an equestrian therapeutic riding center. If you think you might like to try your hand at starting your own business, that’s also an option. There’s some great easy to start business ideas here: http://teenmoneymakingideas.com/20-good-ideas-for-teenagers-who-want-to-start-their-own-small-business-during-the-summer-to-earn-money/ Personally, I love animals but have recently started doing some freelance writing and web design freelance projects. Good luck!

Q: Does people with anxiety disorder go to work?
It's stupid, of course they do but I just wonder how. Been having anxiety disorder for several months and am on medication now. I just wonder how they cope cos I thought of going back to work just dunno how to cope back what I've missed.

A: I do not work. I wish I could but my anxiety is horrible. When I did work it helped me but now I am pregnant and the mixture is something I really wouldn't be able to do at work. When I did work I took medication and that helped a lot. GOod luck
