Q: asthma medication?
I am going to see my daughters doctor tomorow to talk about swithching asthma medication. Because her asthma is not controlled. She is on symbicort. Can anyone tell me a medication that may work slightly better than this one? To all those Singular users out there are you happy with this?

A: If her asthma is not in good control, you need to look at things other than her medications. Are you doing everything you can to control her triggers? Are you using the medication correctly? Are you tracking her status through peak flow meter measurements? Have you "cleaned" her environment of potential triggers (stuffed animals, carpeting, pets, smoking, covers on pillows, etc?) I can discuss this in detail if you want. Just email me at rhubarb3142@yahoo.com

Q: Can I get my asthma medication while in China?
I'm going for a one year study program in China, and I have asthma. I'm currently taking Advair and Singulair. Is it possible to get these medications in China, and if so, what kind of insurance (if any) do I need to get them? Do I need to get prescriptions or not? How much does it cost to buy with and without insurance? Any information is appreciated!

A: Yes you will be able to get asthma medication in China especially in the large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou. Medication in general is much less expensive in China and in most countries outside the US. You probably don't have to worry about insurance. Also in China, physicians control the distribution of prescription drugs. Some hospitals and clinics stipulate patients must buy prescription drugs from the hospitals or directly from the physicians who make the prescriptions.

Q: Can you play football without asthma medication like Biden did?
So, Biden received 5 deferments from the draft because of asthma, but in his book he said he had an "active" childhood, including such things as being a lifeguard and playing football. Interesting... in that quality asthma medications weren't around during his childhood years. Does it appear he skipped, wiggled, avoided the draft as shamefully as other politicians whose feet have been held to the fire for the past 8 years? Someone care to spin (sorry, explain) how Biden's obvious avoidance of service is different from say, Cheney's?

A: I'm thinking your not a journalists. Things such as this will never be investigated, even by "investigative" reporters. The astonishing thing to the coverage is the total lack of stories in the mainstream media about Obama's career before he became a US Senator. There is either nothing value he accomplished, or there is much to be covered up. To the media, Obama was born 3 years ago. It is a fair question you ask, but it will be discarded out of hand because of lack of evidence. Then those same people, will post a question asking things such as: Why is Bush getting rich off of Iraqi oil? Why did Bush order the 911 attacks? Why Bush is the cause of "all our misery" Evidence if conveniently not needed in their questions.

Q: Is it safe to take asthma medication while pregnant?
My husband and I are seriously considering having a baby. Only thing is, I have chronic asthma that requires me to use two types of inhalers a day. I want to be able to have a healthy baby but at the same time, climbing the stairs is a challenge for me now, plus if you add babay weight to that it could be extremely difficult for me.

A: talk to your doctor

Q: What is the best way of treating/controlling asthma? what is the best medication?
What is the best way of treating/controlling asthma? What medications are recommended?

A: The most effective treatment for asthma is identifying triggers, such as pets or aspirin, and limiting or eliminating exposure to them. Desensitization to allergens has been shown to be a treatment option for certain patients. As is common with respiratory disease, smoking is believed to adversely affect asthmatics in several ways, including an increased severity of symptoms, a more rapid decline of lung function, and decreased response to preventive medications. Automobile emissions are considered an even more significant cause and aggravating factor. Asthmatics who smoke or who live near traffic typically require additional medications to help control their disease. Furthermore, exposure of both non-smokers and smokers to wood smoke, gas stove fumes and second-hand smoke is detrimental, resulting in more severe asthma, more emergency room visits, and more asthma-related hospital admissions. Smoking cessation and avoidance of second-hand smoke is strongly encouraged in asthmatics. For those in whom exercise can trigger an asthma attack (exercise-induced asthma), higher levels of ventilation and cold, dry air tend to exacerbate attacks. For this reason, activities in which a patient breathes large amounts of cold air, such as skiing and running, tend to be worse for asthmatics, whereas swimming in an indoor, heated pool, with warm, humid air, is less likely to provoke a response. >>for more about this article, visit this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asthma#Treatment

Q: anybody every get a stomach ache while using asthma medication?
My stomach is killing me ever since I started this new asthma med. Could it be a coinsidence or is a side effect. My doctor doesn't open until tomorrow and I don't think I should stop taking it.

A: Is the medicine pill form? If it is, the pill is likely irritating your stomach. Try taking it after eating something, don't take it on an empty stomach. If the medicine is an inhaler or breathing machine, then I would be really surprised if they caused a stomachache, since you're breathing that stuff in, but I suppose it's possible. I've never had stomach probs from inhalers or medicine in breathing machines, but I have in pill form. If the pain is really bothering you, you might consider calling a pharmacy and talking to the pharmacist and see what he/she suggests for tonight (whether or not you should stop taking it), to hold you over until you can talk to your doctor tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Q: What is the big stir about the asthma medication singular?
It was being discussed all over the news this past week. All of a sudden no more news. What Happen? I have a grandson who had a majority of these symtoms.

A: They say that it causes mood swings, disturbing thoughts and suicidal behaviour. I don't think these symptoms have been researched enough yet. Don't take him off Singulair without talking to your doctor.

Q: Does the asthma medication Proventil cause weight gain?
I was supposed to be given Advair for my asthma, but I didn't want to go on it because I didn't want to gain any weight. Does Proventil cause increased appetite? Does regular albuterol cause weight gain?

A: Albuterol will not cause you to gain weight. Also, Advair is an inhaled steroid, and the side effects of inhaled steroids are not nearly as bad as those of systemic steroids. I'd be much more concerned with not being able to breathe than the possibility of gaining a few pounds. Talk to your doc about the side effects of Advair. When you can't breathe, nothing else really matters!

Q: Does Asthma medication containing oral steroids, such as Seretide, have effects on muscle growth?
Are these steroids somehow different? Or are they the same products that athletes use, just in an inhaled form?

A: No they are not at all the same. Muscle building steroids are called anabolic steroids. Steriods for inflammation such as for asthma are cortico steroids.

Q: do you take asthma medication in pill form and do you like it better than inhalers?
i have discomfort in taking atrovent and albuterol because it makes my heart to race uncomfortably. and i do not like non-inflammatory inhalers, because of their steroids which makes my face and body swell. so my doctor suggested i see a pulmonologist and request a pill. i cant do that until i am insured, so i was wondering if anyone is taking an asthma pill and if you like it. what side effects do you have? i need to get my asthma under control for my athletic endeavors as well as my sleep. thank you.

A: After my doctor put me on Singulair, (once daily) I hardly ever have to use my inhaler and have not had to use steroids in almost 9 years. Singulair is a pill

Q: Best over the counter medication for asthma?
can i get any medication for asthma? i used to use inhaler, but i don't have at anymore. and i dont wanan get prescription. so, does anyone know what is the strongest over the counter medication for the problem?

A: Allergy medications like Benadryl, Claritin, Chlor-Trimeton can be good to help reduce the severity of allergic asthma. If your asthma is bad enough that these don't help you can get a Primatene myst inhaler. I would only use this as a last resort. The best non medication treatment for asthma control is learning your asthma triggers and avoiding them. If you can not avoid your triggers, you will need prescription medications. Just a note: The National Asthma Prevention Program and the Expert Panel of Diagnosis and Management of Asthma both agree if you have to use a prescription inhaler such as albuterol more then two time per week, your asthma is NOT in control and you will need a prescription controller medication. Good luck.

Q: a pharmacy patient has a severe reaction to peanuts. Which asthma medication should she avoid?
What would be a long-acting alternative?

A: Atrovent or Ipratropium. Alternatives are: inhaled corticosteroid such as: Budesonide, Flixotide, Beclomethosone and long acting beta agonists such as: Eformoterol or Salmeterol.

Q: Can Asthma medication affect pregnancy or getting pregnant?
My wife has asthma and she takes the ventilin inhaler and another drug named symbicort. Can these affect pregnancy or affect conceiving?

A: I don't think so. I also have asthma, just a mild case and it didn't affect my pregnancy with my son. I am also currently pregnant again. I've been sick this past few weeks and have had to use my inhaler - albuterol. Asthma medication is one of the OK medicine to take while pregnant.

Q: Is it okay to use nitric oxide supplements if your on asthma medication?

A: you do not use anything with out telling your doctor first

Q: what is the best medication for exercise induced asthma?
(Advair, singulair, or albuterol) i heard all this medications are great for exercise induce asthma, but which one works the best i play soccer in high school and we do so much running everyday so want to be taking the best medication.... Or if you know of any others that work better for my condition please feel free to let me know, thanks.

A: I have exercise induce asthma, before doctors even admitted it existed. If exercise is the only trigger and you don't experience any symptoms outside of exercise, I don't think that the advair will help that much. What has worked for me is to take the albuterol before I exercise (at least 15 min. before). I also try to control my breathing, which is hard and can be painful. But if you start out controlling your breathing, when you start running, you may be less likely to trigger an attack or moderate the symptoms. I would count to three as I inhaled, hold my breath for a count of three, and then exhale slowly for a count of three. I would also breath in through my nose. The breathing thing really works. I have had exercise induced asthma since I was a child, but was told that I just hyperventilate - all the asthmatic classmates were convinced I was having an asthma attack. It wasn't until a college basketball player died of exercise induced asthma in the 80's that the diagnosis changed. I played baseball and soccer for years and just concentrated on my breathing. It can really help, but the albuterol makes it easier. What I have also discovered is that the more that I exercise, on a steady and regular basis (no sprints) the easier I breathe and the fewer attacks I have even while exercising. As a side note, my exercise induced asthma converted to chronic asthma after a severe, recurrent bout of bronchitis and I now use singulair on a regular basis. I have included a link about exercise induced asthma below.
