Q: What symptoms may cause a doctor to prescribe Albuterol over other asthma medications?
For what particular asthma symptoms does Albuterol (Salbutamol) cater to? Why may a doctor determine that his or her patient needs to take albuterol instead of other potential asthma medications?

A: Fast acting B2 agonists like albuterol "cater" to the bronchial smooth muscle constriction that is occuring arround your lower airways. the albuterol relaxes the smooth muscle allowing the bronchioles to widen and more air to pass. There is airway inflammation occuring as well that is usually taken care of with steroids. If you use your inhaler more than twice a week your asthma may not be controlled and you may need to be taking controller meds as well. Like Nichole mentioned Albuterol is the cheapest and most widely used beta agonist rescue inhaler. there is another that is used but it hasn't been proven to work any better or faster and its about 6 times as expensive.

Q: Are there any home remedies that can lessen the effects of asthma symptoms?
I went to my doctor due to the asthma symptoms, and he told me that it would go away when the pollen levels get a touch lower. He told me to try some home treatment and remedies, like honey, in the meantime, and I wanted to see more suggestions. Thanks for the help!

A: Well caffiene is a mild bronchodilator so you may try drinking soda or coffee. Keep in mind that this doesnt work fast, it takes time for it to dissolve in your bloodstream. Also, you may try Oregano, I have heard from several of my patient that it helps them. There is an Oregano supplement called Oregomax that you can buy at most vitamin stores.

Q: Ways to relieve asthma symptoms with alternative medicine? ?
I have asthma and recently it has been giving me some trouble. I have been put on Prednisone and am already using flovent and albuteral. does anyone have any homeopathic remedies that might help relieve some of my asthma symptoms?

A: be very careful taking any kind of herbal medicine for asthma. you might accidentally ingest something you are allregic to and make yourself worse.

Q: What kinds of tea help with the symptoms of asthma?
I have heard that tea could help relieve asthma symptoms, but I don't know if it's green or black, and if there are any herba/ teas that might help.

A: In theory, there are two things about tea that can help: the steam/hot liquid (which is a wash in comparison) and the bromoxanthines like caffeine. These chemicals have weak bronchodilator properties, enough for people to talk about but not enough to be useful. Your rescue inhaler is several orders of magnitude more potent. There may also be something immeasurable here. Before rescue inhalers were ubiquitous, the primary drug used for asthma was a stronger bromoxanthine-type drug, theophylline. It's fallen out of favor in both asthma and COPD for the most part, because the combination of theophylline and albuterol, as an example, shows no measurable benefit over albuterol alone. And yet some patients, more with COPD than asthma, feel like they're breathing better even when their spirometry shows no improvement. If you want to experiment, I'd think the strongest, blackest tea you can stand would be the thing to try first.

Q: What are the types of and symptoms of asthma?
What are the different types of asthma (sports, bronchial, etc) and what are the symptoms/treatment of each?

A: Signs and symptoms are different for everyone however they are the same for the one person who has asthma. In other words, one person may cough uncontrollably with their asthma attack. That cough would happen with a sports induced attack or a cold air induced attack. It should be the same. Someone else may wheeze with their asthma attacks to the same triggers. The key to managing asthma is learning your triggers and avoiding them as much as possible. If you are unable to avoid your triggers you will need medication to help. Controller medications are taken everyday and help prevent attacks. These medications include Singulair, inhaled steroids and oral steroids. Rescue medications are use to reverse an attack. the two most common rescue medication are albuterol (provental or ventelin) or Xopenex. Check out the links below for more information.

Q: What are the signs or symptoms of asthma?
I think that I may have it. Can someone please tell me what the symptoms of asthma are... and how do you know you have it? Thanks.

A: Common asthma symptoms include: Coughing. Coughing from asthma is often worse at night or early in the morning, making it hard to sleep. Wheezing. Wheezing is a whistling or squeaky sound when you breathe. Chest tightness. This can feel like something is squeezing or sitting on your chest. Shortness of breath. Some people say they can't catch their breath, or they feel breathless or out of breath. You may feel like you can't get enough air in or out of your lungs. Faster breathing or noisy breathing. The only way to know for sure would be to see your doctor.

Q: Can someone give me any home remedies for asthma symptoms and any other info on asthma that might be helpful?
are there any home remedies for asthma's symptoms?

A: If you or your child are having an asthma attach, and have no ventelin on hand, the doctors tell you to drink black coffee. not sure if it should be warm or cold, but something tells me maybe cold. my daughter used to have it and I bought her these aroma therapy jars, one was ucaliptus and the other was jasmin I believe. I would put them in her room when she was sick and not breathing well, and they really do help.

Q: Is there any way to help reduce the symptoms of Asthma While exercising?
I have mild-moterate asthma and when I exercise it gets MUCH worse... (obvioslly) I take a inhaler before i exercise but it doesnt help all that much it just helps a bit. Is there ANYTHING That can reduce the symptoms? Oh and if it matters i'm 13. Thank You in advance! Kayla5654 I already have a spacer and i can't use my inhaler without it otherwise i can't do it.

A: I know you need to take it 30 minutes before you excercise. Another problem with those who workout is the weather. The cold air will probably get to you.

Q: Why do my asthma symptoms increase while I'm driving?
I noticed that I always get an increase in my asthma/breathing symptoms behind the wheel, especially on the highway. Is this because of increased stress, or am I also breathing in toxins on the roads which are triggering it?

A: Do you only notice the symptoms when you are behind the wheel, or is it the same if you are a passenger? If its only when driving, I'd say stress. Otherwise, it may be the toxins. Or maybe you're just allergic to your car!

Q: Can Ginkgo Biloba help treat asthma symptoms?
I am thinking about taking Ginkgo Biloba to help control my asthma symptoms and I am for people that had success doing this and how much Ginkgo Biloba they took?

A: It has no known effect on asthma. Don't waste your time.

Q: Have you ever suffered from fatigue while having asthma symptoms?
I have asthma. Usually around times when I have frequent asthma symptoms I get abnormally tired. Mostly, I would be be able to do my regular chores and then afterward fall out sleeping as early as 8:00 PM in the evening and wake up after a good eight or nine hours of sleep. However, sometimes I am so tired I can't do anything else but sleep, up to 18 hours in one day!! During those times I don't even have the energy to eat. I've talked to my doctor about this. He says it's rare but possible. Am I the only one who has this asthma symptom? If you have asthma or know anyone who does please let me know. Thanks!

A: It makes sense if you think about it... having asthma symptoms lowers the oxygen concentration in your blood. You body needs oxygen to operate. If you're low on oxygen you have less energy and you're using all your strength just to breathe. But if your asthma is this severe you need a better treatment plan and a new doctor - look for a pulmonary specialist, not just a regular doctor.

Q: What kind of infection or disease resemble asthma symptoms?
I've been having pressure in my chest, feels like someone is sitting on me and it makes hard for me to breathe, I feel myself having to almost gasp for air and wheezing at times. Im thinking it could be something in the polluted air, or possibly something in my house. I have also been burping a lot, but I dont think the two are related. My mom felt like this a few months back, so is there any virus that causes things like this. Its in the upper portion of my chest, around where my heart would be.

A: Possibly acid reflux...

Q: How can you tell the difference between cystic fibrosis symptoms and asthma symptoms in a toddler?
Is there any way without doing a sweat test? My son (he's two) goes to the pediatric pulmonologist soon but I am really worried about this.

A: honestly both of my girls had the sweat test done and it is painless. I thank god every day that it is just asthma. I don't think there is a way, that is why he is having a test done to determine which it is, because the characteristics are the same. In case you don't know..they wrap his arm with cling wrap (the stuff you cover food with) and let it sit on his arm. it also has gauze stuck to his arm to collect the sweat. It is a simple procedure, my daughters have had many, i think the broncoscopy with endoscopy was the hardest for them. good luck

Q: Developing bad Asthma symptoms in a short period of time?
Ok so here it is. I just got an inhaler because i would start wheezing out of nowhere and i wouldn't even notice. But now its like every time i get up i have to use my inhaler. (I also have a cold). So i`m using 10-15shots a day. I just developed asphma about a week ago.

A: if you are using it that much, your asthma is out of control and you need to see your physician, like NOW.
