Q: eucalyptus plant?
Does anyone know how to preserve eucalyptus? I have been growning it and would like to use it in a flower arrangement. The last time I picked it, and brought in inside it just dried up.
A: If you want to preserve fresh foliage, use a 50-50 glycerin and water mix. Stick the cut ends of stems in this mixture in a low light area, in about 2-3 weeks, the Eucalyptus will have absorbed the glycerin and be ready for use. Glycerin can usually be obtained from a pharmacy and you can easily do your own preserving. Much of the Eucalyptus I have seen in the craft stores all smells alike and has been obviously dyed in different colors. To each his own, but why waste the beauty of the many varied "natural" scents of Eucalyptus?
Q: How often should I water a eucalyptus plant? They keep drying up. ?
The leaves get dry and brittle and I can't smell the great scent anymore. I like to inhale it for my asthma.
A: Water it until the ground is damp, but don't over water it!
It might need some plant food & warmth as well.
Q: How can I use a eucalyptus plant to help with my asthma? ?
I just bought one because I heard that it was a good natural remedy for asthma. But now I'm not quite sure what to do with it. I put it next to my bed at night so it is an inch or two from my face. I also take off the leaves and breathe it in.
A: From this site: http://www.asthmainformationguide.com/natural-herbal-remedies-for-asthma
"Applying balm of Gilead, eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil or clove oil to the chest and back also helps in better breathing. It is important that the essential oils are mixed with a base oil - sesame would be the best for those with dry or infection type asthma or mustard for those with congestion type asthma."
Q: Can a eucalyptus plant (not the tree, the plant) turn brown, brittle, and hard? or is it not eucalyptus?
A: Eucalyptus are mainly trees and shrubs. If the plant is very small chances are it isn't a eucalyptus. usually they have grey/green leaves that are slightly leathery. They are only brown, brittle and hard when the plant has died or the leaves are dried.

Q: What is the recommended minimum distance you should plant a eucalyptus tree from a building.?
A: This really depends on what zone you are in?
If you get cold winters you will want to plant it close to the house on a protected side out of the wind.
If you are in a warmer zone, you can plant it any where you want. If roots was your concern, they do not have invasive roots like a willow.

Do you know where I can get it in the Philadelphia area, specifically Bensalem? Thanks!
A: I'm not sure where you can get it, but I make my own. It works for me. I do get an occasional bite, but I'd rather have a bug bite than use a product containing deet. That stuff is toxic.
Q: Why is my eucalyptus plant dried out?
I started some eucalyptus seeds in a very small terrarium a few months ago. The plants were growing well and barely fit in the terrarium anymore, so I transplanted them to a pot. I made sure to take a bunch of dirt from the terrarium with it so I would minimize the disruption to the roots. I dug a small hole and put the plant in. Then I soaked the dirt in the pot until a bit of water came out the bottom of the pot and put it up on the window sill to get some sunlight.
Here it is a few days later and the plant looks really dried and shriveled. Did I kill it? I soaked the dirt again today and put it in a different window thinking maybe it wasn't getting enough light. Any advice or did I kill the poor thing?
A: Eucalyptus can handle full sun and would be a good idea to put it out somewhere your getting at least 8 hours of light a day. Plants can stress out if transplanted and sometimes die without much warning. You could try seaweed fertiliser which is a liquid form to help it out a bit. If it looks too sick then sometimes your better off replacing it. Once planted in the ground remember to mulch to retain the moisture in the soil. There big trees too so plant away from the house.
Q: i want to freshen my dried eucalyptus plants.?
how do i make them smell again? do i have to throw them away and get new? someone told me if i boil the leaves my house will fill up with the smell? is that true?
how do you clean them?
A: Run fairly warm water over them it will bring the oil back up to the surface, if the eucalyptus has been dyed you will have dye run off so be careful when you are washing that you don't get the dye everywhere, I usually wrap mine up in newspaper and lay it out in the sun on the newspaper to dry.
Q: what makes eucalyptus plants smell?
I pulled some fresh eucalyptus off of a tree and it doesn't smell. how do you make them smell?
A: Eucalyptus leaves may not smell unless you crush them to release the oils. Some species of Eucalyptus may have stronger, or sweeter smells, than others.
