Q: Where can I find vegetarian cooking classes in Dallas?
It is one of my New Year's resolutions to become a vegetarian by the end of this year. I am eliminating all meats except fish at this point-- and will eliminate that by the middle of this year. I am trying to find classes that wil teach proper vegetarian cooking in Dallas and nothing is coming up!! I want to class environment and the interaction. Does anyone have suggestions? I have done searches over the web but maybe I am not doing it right. I know Central Market has classes but they are most meat or cheese.

A: You can ask at any natural food store. Also, there may well be a local vegetarian chapter, society, or whatever.

Q: what are the best spices for vegetarian cooking?
am still learning to cook vegetarian and it's truly a challenge! i want to know the secret why some vegetarian dining really taste great. is it because of the spices? i guess i want to know what is the "magic" ingredient to vegetarian cooking...if there is..thanks!

A: The best Idea is to look at your favorite cuisines and adapt to the vegetables Indian uses cinnamon, coriander, ginger, cardamon, turmeric and a whole lot more French: shallotts, garlic, thyme, parsley, tarragon Italian: garlic, oregano, basil, Greek: oregano, cinnamon, cloves, thyme, garlic there are also certain veggies that lend that extra umph to your cooking. Tomatoes are crucial, they add flavor and moisture, Onions, browned add sweetness and depth to the dish. Mushrooms and texture and a deep flavor as well as helping new vegetarians ease into the new diet by providing a "meatiness" to the dish. Some veggies soak up flavor so you need to add more Potatoes, eggplant and tofu will always need a bit more to get the right flavor. and ALWAYS buy the best extra virgin olive oil that you can afford, it is good for you and adds great flavor to any dish. happy cooking!

Q: Is there such a thing as a Vegetarian cooking school?
I'm a vegetarian and a sophomore in high school and I'm thinking about my future. I'm trying to graduate early and get into a cooking school. But if working/owning my own restaruante, why would I have to learn to cook meat? So is there such a thing as a University where I can go to learn culinary arts? Sorry for any spelling mistakes.

A: Great choice! There are not a lot of vegetarian places to eat in our area, but if you go to the S.F. bay area.. there are more.. Look up the culinary arts programs in S.F. My reason for vegetarian is 1. it's healthier.. Look up Dean Ornish.. He might have some resources in his literature.

Q: How to popularise the Vegetarian cooking class in Chicago?
I am a vegetarian by birth nad my kidshave serious allergy to Meat/chicken/ fish, gelatin and all other products where animal's bod is used... Milk and egg is O.K. So to tell her classmates i started showing how we cook food. Now i have started teaching adults...i was wondering are there more teachers who teach Veg-cooking in IL and how and what they did to be successful.Or any tips to teach to more people?

A: Post ads on the community boards at places like Whole Foods.

Q: Vegetarian cooking on a major budget?
I'm looking for some good veggie recipies. To narrow it down a bit... I don't like hummus. And I use dairy products. And I can't afford those exotic obscure products. I've been eating meat for quite awhile, because of my anti-herbivore husband; but I've been missing my old vegetarian cooking. The food just tastes so much better. My husband will eat veggie food, but only if he's got a side of meat for himself. I want my son to be open to vegetarianism. He's a year old and obviously prefers veggies and fruit to meat. Anything I could cook for him and me, and then make my husband a chicken breast on the side or something, would be great. I'm looking for home cooking, not gourmet.

A: For a bunch of good vegetarian/vegan recipes, you could try this site: http://www.vegcooking.com/ As for being on a budget... Being a vegetarian can be very cheap. Beans are dirt cheap, vegetables and fruits can be found at good prices... I would suggest trying to find an asian supermarket. Where I live, everything is always cheaper at an asian market than at a major supermarket. (tofu and vegetables for example) If you are talking more along the lines of meat substitutes... most supermarkets carry gardenburgers/ boca burgers/ and morning star farm products. As long as you keep up on the sales you should be able to find them at an OK price sometimes. A while ago my boyfriends mom got me a Huge box of Boca Burgers from BJ's (20 large burgers I think) for like 8 bucks. (at my supermarket its like $4.99 for a pack of four, so $8 for 20 is a real bargain) Good luck :]

Q: Ideas on where to find vegetarian cooking classes?
The hospital I work at has for the first time ever an option for a vegetarian cooking class but it isn't anything I can fit into my schedual. I need to find a place that has the classes in the evening so ideas please! I live in Michigan Berrien County to be a little more exact. I am about 4 miles or so north of South Bend Indiana!

A: Yahoo search

Q: Can you take just a Vegetarian cooking program in Culinary Schools?
I'm interested in going to Culinary school, but I'm a vegetarian and don't have a desire to prepare meat, is there an option to just learn vegetarian cooking in culinary school?

A: There are programs just for vegetarian cooking and some of the top cooking schools do offer similar programs. Keep in mind however that not having the ability to work in every station in a kitchen may limit where you can be hired and what you can do. You will basically be limited to working in vegetarian only establishments, so depending on what your goals are long term this could either be perfect for you or make things extremely challanging!

Q: Vegetarian cooking!?
one of my best friends is vegetarian and whenever i have parties, i feel bad because she never has anything to eat as a meal, like everyone else, bc its all meat. any suggestions of good meals, appetizers snacks... anything!!?

A: You might ask her if she would like to bring something or you could ask her for a recipe of something she likes. usually people with special diets don't like attention called to them and eat before they go. there are so many good cheeses, but you don't know what she includes or excludes.

Q: Looking for some recommendations on vegetarian cooking books?
my sister birthday is coming up, lately she has taken some intererst in vegetarian food and cooking, and i thought this can be a great B-day present for her. so i am thinking maybe two books. BTW i will be buying the books via amazon so any links to books on that site will be great. thanks in advance Maya

A: Look up any books by Deborah Madison. That's what I did for a friend. Or any Moosewood cookbook.

Q: Have you ever taken a class in vegetarian cooking? Did it help you learn about nutrition? New recipes?
I recently learned about the Natural Gourmet Institute, and if I lived on the East Coast I'm sure I'd sign up for one of their classes!

A: I've taken alot of vegan cooking classes and have learned alot about substitutions for dairy and eggs and sweeteners. I would recommend taking lots of classes - it will give more variety to your meals.

Q: Does anyone have ideas for vegetarian cooking but with a soul food flavor?
I am considering becoming a vegan, meats are boring me but I love veggies but without the fat and high calorie sauces. Any good suggestions for preparing veggies ala african american style.

A: Soul food typically has pork fat. Without that, you don't have the flavor. Greens are steamed with small chunks of pork fat & onions. Snouts with BBQ. Mac & cheese is loaded with both fat & calories. Instead of becoming anything, eat healthy. Eat with moderation, soul, mexican, or anything you want. A little of a bad thing is not so bad. Take care

Q: Do you know any great vegetarian cooking schools?
I am considering going to one to become a veggie chef.

A: I've never been to either of these, but they look reputable. http://www.naturalcookery.com/ http://www.compassionatecooks.com/

Q: What college has a Vegetarian Cooking Major?
Im a sophmore in high school trying to find a college that has a vegearian major. Is there a specific major im looking for? Anyone know a college? Links are greatly appreciated =]

A: You'll need to look into a culinary school.

Q: How can I be a guest chef for Indian vegetarian cooking on a cooking show?

A: Learn how to cook. Something other than "Indian" or "vegetarian" would probably increase your chances on most channels (except maybe a local access channel with an audience of 3).

Q: Vegetarian Cooking Suggestions?
I'm 15 and I've been a vegetarian for more or less a year, and I've decided to start cooking for myself, but I don't really know how to cook. So, are there any suggestions on vegetarian cooking? Such as recipes, advice, sites, etc.?

A: so many websites. http://vegetarian.allrecipes.com/ http://vegkitchen.com/ http://www.vegsource.com/ im sure you know, but make sure you get your protein and iron! (beans, nuts, spinach, mushrooms etc.) also, some vegetarian products are fortified with vitamins and minerals, like soy milk, because veggies might not get them in their diet on their own. i wont give you any recipes b/c i dont know if you're a lacto- ovo or a vegan or what but hope the sites will help for easy meals, i personally like chik nuggets and buffalo chik from morningstar (frozen) or frozen vegetarian indian meals or chinese rice noodles and add veggies to make a stir fry (add soy or terryaki sauce) or salads or tofu stir-fry or eggplant parm or portabella burgers or mariniate veggies in oil and vinegar and then put them on a skewar and grill them.... good luck.
